New Paintings

The last few months have been very busy for me in the studio. Every time I start to feel like a pro, I begin to learn all sorts of new things which reminds me that I am still a student and learning so much all the time... something that I hope can continue for a long time.
I've been focusing on still life as far as my painting is concerned. There are a couple others that belong here; one I haven't photographed and the other is in progress. Also, I've begun working with the landscape in fabric. More photos to come soon!

I plan on adding in dimensions for these pieces here but nothing is bigger than 19" to give you some sense of scale. These are not my professional slides either which I say so that you know all of the canvases are put together nicely, not warped as they may appear below.

I have opened an Etsy site: Painter E Gilmore There is absolutely nothing on it right now!!! But please be sure to check back as I am planning on putting
work up by mid-January.

Summer Work

Well this Summer has been really rough in the way of painting.. just hasn't worked out because of space issues.  I'm hurting for it real bad and can't wait to get back into the studio (five more weeks, blah!).
I've done a couple images on the computer for people though...

Wonderful organization! You should go to the show.

And here is some album art I did for a friend:

I've actually really been enjoying making these things so I guess I'll maybe tried to get paid doing these things at some point :)

Looking

More from this artist.

The textures in this piece immediately grabbed my attention and it wasn't until after loving that for a while that I even noticed the figures.  This is an important aspect of painting for me; creativity with the actual medium weighing equally or more than the concept of the piece.  While I can appreciate a great conceptual piece, I truly love getting lost in a medium.  My recent floral pieces have been celebrating this; which has also been a much needed break from more conceptual work.
For years I was beginning paintings with a lot of time focused on what I was trying to say before I ever touched a brush.  I appreciate this method and by no means have thrown it out, but jumping into the paint straight away thinking of only design has been liberating.  I plan on doing three to four more florals, two random pieces I've already promised and then hopefully I'll have time this Summer to begin working on a few pieces which subtly begin in concept but having that be only perhaps 20% of the work.
Now the only thing is to get more nice days so I can set up my materials on the balcony.  I suppose I could use the attic on rainy days like these though.

...One Month Later

Well I've been very busy the past month with the finishing up of Spring Semester and Meghan's wedding.  Everything has been great and here are the paintings to prove it!

First layer of oil on floral painting for Meghan and Dave.  I forget the dimensions but it is about the same size as one of those white plastic lawn chairs.

Meg's bouquet drying for me to use as the subject matter in the floral paintings for her.

Studio floral, about 20"x24" oil on canvas currently residing on my boyfriend's apartment wall.

Weird dried bouquet a guy named Justin in my studio made which I was using for my studio florals.

First studio floral, 18"x24" oil on canvas, sorry all of these photos are such terrible quality.

Studio floral about 34"x14" oil on canvas

Little sketch in oil for Chad's cover art for his new EP.

I'm really feeling this palate for the florals and the slight abstraction of the subject.  I would love to do these on a commission basis, please send my info along if you know a person who would enjoy these.

Swedish Research

Culture

I've been thinking a lot about culture and how it is involved in my life.   I grew up as an "Irish Roman Catholic" and now consider myself an "Atheist Mutt" (in the most loving way of course)
So how do these things blend together and how are the other cultures that touch my life interwoven?  I have a large percentage of Swedish blood as well and I identify as an American;   but as a person with no Native American blood am I allowed to claim that as part of my personal identity?  Although my family was not yet in the Sates when the Europeans drove out and murdered the Native Americans, my family has been in the country for long enough for me to accept that as part of MY cultural history.  I feel as though I am more closely linked to that than I am to say the Irish famine.

Here is the first touch of my research for these thoughts.

David Lachman in "Aspect: Joie De Vivre"

Watching the fifth volume of Aspect was highly entertaining. David Lachman's video "Home Made" had me expecting anything but about half way through the viewer is welcomed into Lachman's joke.
Stills from David Lachman's "Home Made":

!SPOILER ALERT!
In this high speed video (literally in fast forward) Lachman is filmed going to the grocery store, buying cookie dough ice cream, driving home, straining the ice cream, baking the dough and enjoying the outcome. Most people can probably imagine having this stupid and hilarious idea and following through on it with friends. This is the reason that it was involved in the "Joy Of Life" volume of Aspect, the little mundane things in life are sometimes the most fun and rewarding.
More David Lachman!

A fun and thought provoking generative topic pulled from this video is "Everyday Life."
Here are some examples on where this topic can go along with some supporting research:

That's The Story Of My Life
This lesson plan encourages students (grades 6-12) to develop story boards about adolescence for a graphic novel. For motivation make a big list of movies and TV shows the students enjoy which star characters of their age. Help the students see that many of these plots revolve around normal things such as social events, friendships and school.

Transformational Art Using Furniture
Coming away from story telling, this lesson plan invites students to look at everyday objects in a new way. Students may have old furniture sitting in a basement or garage which they walk by regularly only seeing junk. Creating art out of "junk" is also great for promoting recycling!

Fashion and Functionality

New clothes are a big deal for people of all ages, especially those of us still getting new "school clothes" each September. Studying one designer will give students an idea of a commercially successful style. Students can then evaluate the functionality of these pieces, decide whether they like fashion or function better and create their own design based on this research.

Artists I'm Looking At

Jeremy Enecio definitely worth checking out more of his work.

Jenny Saville, amazing.

Audrey Kawasaki

Francis Bacon, always looking at his work.

Saw this piece at the MFA last week and can't stop thinking about it. I really need to focus on how he paints darkness for one of my suicide pieces. The brightest reflection in the right vase is legit just a messy swipe of white paint, I love it.

Alexander Pierschel new guy I just found, fun work.

New Pieces

Muscle Man, Oil on Board 20"x16" The photo is bad, the board isn't actaully warped like that.

Pancreas, Oil on Canvas 24"x18" I hate the dimensions 18x24 but I have got a bunch of stretched 18x24's for free and I am poor so expect to see more of that terrible size.

View of a Diaphram in a body cut in half, Oil on Canvas, 10"x12"

Uterus, Oil on Paper, 20-ish"x30-ish"?
I have another one of a liver but no photo. I'm going to start another Uterus on paper today or tomorrow. These pieces are really fun, they are allowing me to loosen up wtih my painting style and also be grossed out on a regular basis which is always fun.

Most of the articles which I found to be relevant and interesting focused mainly on working with the ideas of identity through current influences. People are constantly receiving news from many sources so it is interesting to take a moment and think about where you gained information on major current events, such as the 2008 Presidential Election. How did the source of the information possibly influence your thought process? What was your final opinion vs. your current opinion in the aftermath?
Graphic Novels are also a great source of new media for students and adults alike to get into; even though they have been around for many years. It continues to get easier and easier to translate a graphic novel onto a computer and turn it into many different things for example a stop animation film.

Campaign on Homelessness Awareness

Here is the beginning of another project I have been thinking about over the break. I plan to do several of these with color/picture variations. When I make the text box on Photoshop I'm having trouble pressing Enter for the next line so I've been making each line it's own layer which seems sort of ridiculous. So other than the little technical issues like that, which I can solve with my Photoshop books, things should roll through pretty quickly with this one. Maybe I can make some waterproof copies and hang them up in the city.

Internet

So here is the project I'm working on over break. It is my representation of the internet in paper. It is a puzzle fold book so it can be opened many different ways as one browses through both specific topics and guilty pleasures.

Porn obviously had to be included in this project so I went to Borders and bought my first porn! It is so weird because obviously I and most people have seen a lot of porn, but you don't have to buy it anymore seeing as it is all over the internet for free.

I mostly use the internet for communication, to find out good places to go for entertainment and food, reference and just general time wasting.
